In August, the United States reached the lowest unemployment rate in 29 years. But a survey carried out by the country’s largest trade union center shows that many of the new jobs are being offered without social benefits. The main ones affected are young people in search of first place.
According to the US Department of Labor, the unemployment rate in the country is 4.2% of the EAP (Economically Active Population). On average, 1 in 25 American workers is without a job. In total, the country has 139.264 million people able to work.
The highest unemployment rate, 13.5%, is found among young people aged 16 to 20 years. Since the beginning of the year, when it was at 14.6%, the rate has been falling.
The “ease” of finding a job in the country has created a concern among the directors of the AFL-CIO, a union center that has 13 million members: do the new jobs offer health insurance, a retirement plan, do they pay overtime or fair wages?
To get answers, they conducted an unprecedented survey of young American workers. The aim was to prove the existence of poor working conditions and promote a unionization campaign among young people.
The AFL-CIO hired independent research institute Peter D. Hart Research Associates.
The result, released this week, shows that, among workers aged 18 to 34, only 45% receive health insurance provided by the employer and only 43% have social security contributions.
Without health insurance, the US citizen can only be seen in the emergency room of hospitals. Medical care is restricted to clinics maintained by charitable associations. About 70% of Americans have insurance taken out by the companies they work for.
Statistics also show that things are worse for young black workers: only 36% of them have health insurance and 32% have pension contributions.
Of every two new jobs offered to young people between the ages of 20 and 24, one is taken by a white man. The other is disputed by black and Latino women and men. With the survey data, the union wants to promote a campaign to increase social benefits for young people. It intends to get government support, with incentives for companies that support employees.
